Key state elections underway in Bavaria and Hesse – DW – 10/08/2023

Markus Söder, the leader of the conservative Christian Social Union (CSU), is expected to maintain his position as Bavarian state premier.

However, polls suggest the party is performing at 36-37%, which would be its lowest result in decades.

The CSU has ruled in the southern state of Bavaria since 1957.

Söder, whose ambitions to one day become chancellor could be crushed by a poor performance, has sought to capitalize on voters’ concerns about the issue of migration.

“The borders must be secured and they must be secured the way that the Bavarian border police do it,” he told broadcaster ZDF, while criticising Scholz’s coalition for “sweeping the issue under the carpet.”

The CSU’s partner party, the populist Free Voters (FW), has meanwhile seen a boost in support since its leader, Hubert Aiwanger, was embroiled in an antisemitism scandal.

Hubert Aiwanger admitted earlier this year to possessing Nazi pamphlets which were found in the schoolbag he used as a teenager in the late 1980s.

Aiwanger dismissed the scandal as a “witchhunt” and managed to maintain his position as Söder’s deputy. His party is polling at 15%, a step up compared to the 11.6% it garnered in the last election in 2018.
