Sharone Lifschitz has said she fears her elderly parents may be among the hostages taken by Hamas to Gaza.
Their small kibbutz near the Gaza border, Nir Oz, was among those that came under attack over the weekend in the surprise strike by Hamas.
“This scale is very hard to comprehend. You know, we are not able to give full names, but my community consisted of 400 people. And about 80 are missing now. Many, many more are dead,” Lifschitz, who is based in London, told DW.
Asked what help was on hand from the military amid the terror attack, Lifschitz said people in the kibbutz were trying to defend themselves for the initial hours.
“They were defending for their own life for more than seven hours. It took hours for the police, for the army to come. It is horrifying what has happened,” she said.
Asked whether she believed the prospect of an Israeli ground offensive helped or hurt her parents’ chances, should they indeed be Hamas hostages, Lifschitz said, “I don’t talk politics at the moment because I don’t have the luxury.”
Instead, Lifschitz said, she wanted to focus on calling for all possible actors to mobilize to secure the hostages’ immediate release.
“I’m here because I want to continue to focus the attention of every decent human being to the immediate release of these people. They are not part of the war. These are elderly people and children and mothers, and they should be immediately released,” she said.
“To be honest, I call on everybody to hold everything and just release them, create a corridor and get them out of there,” she said. “I’m calling on every decent government to get actively involved. I’m calling on the Arab nations to come and get those people out. It’s possible.”
