World Health Organization (WHO) spokesperson Margaret Harris said the Shifa hospital, in central Gaza City, was “coming under bombardment,” adding that there were reports of more hospitals being attacked in Gaza.
The Hamas-run government in Gaza earlier said 13 people were killed and dozens wounded in an Israeli attack on the Shifa hospital compound.
A Palestinian official quoted by the DPA news agency said multiple hospitals in Gaza, including Shifa, were coming under fire.
When asked about Hamas accusing Israel of the bombing, Harris said: “I haven’t got the detail on Al Shifa, but we do know they are coming under bombardment.”
According to the WHO, heavy bombardment in recent weeks, destruction and the lack of medical supplies have caused 20 of the 36 hospitals in the Gaza Strip to no longer be operational.
Reuters news agency said it verified graphic footage shared on social media showing a number of dead and injured people, including children, in an area of the Shifa hospital.
The Associated Press news agency earlier quoted a spokesman for the Hamas-run Health Ministry as saying that the Nasr children’s hospital was also being targeted, prompting evacuations.
There was no immediate comment from Israel.
On Thursday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said they killed dozens of militants in heavy fighting near the hospital.
The IDF has accused Hamas of using civilian facilities, particularly the Shifa hospital, as hideouts for its leaders and to coordinate their attacks against Israel.
On October 17, Hamas blamed an explosion in another Gaza hospital, Al Ahli, on Israeli strikes. Israel rejected the allegation, and said the blast was caused by a misfired Palestinian rocket.
