Netanyahu says no plans to occupy Gaza – DW – 11/10/2023

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his country has no intention of reoccupying Gaza after its war against Hamas.

“We don’t seek to conquer Gaza, we don’t seek to occupy Gaza, and we don’t seek to govern Gaza,” Netanyahu told US television Fox News on Thursday.

However, he added that a “credible force” would be needed to enter the Palestinian territory if necessary to prevent the emergence of militant threats.

“So, we have to have a credible force that, if necessary, will enter Gaza and kill the killers. Because that’s what will prevent the reemergence of a Hamas-like entity,” Netanyahu said.

His remarks on Thursday come only days after he told America’s ABC News, “Israel will for an indefinite period have the overall security responsibly.”

After those remarks on Monday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said post-crisis governance in Gaza must include Palestinian voices.

“No reoccupation of Gaza after the conflict ends. No attempt to blockade or besiege Gaza. No reduction in the territory of Gaza,” Blinken said at a press conference in Tokyo on Wednesday.

Netanyahu told Fox News after the war, “What we have to see is Gaza demilitarized, deradicalized and rebuilt.”
